PESHAWAR, Sept 26: The central deputy secretary-general of Awami National Party Afrasyab Khattak has said that unnatural demarcation line between Pakistan and Afghanistan is unacceptable to the Pukhtuns living on both sides of the border.
"The Durand Line will finish soon and Pukhtun nation will become united", Mr Khattak said, while speaking at a function here on Sunday. Malgary Doctoran, a sister organization of the ANP organized the function to commemorate eight death anniversary of late Afghan president Dr Najeebullah.
Afghan refugees also attended the anniversary function. Dr Najeeb who was in the UN compound in Kabul was assassinated in 1996 after Taliban took over control of the city. Mr Khattak who also remained chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan held Islamabad responsible for the ongoing disorder in certain border areas of Afghanistan including Paktia and Paktika provinces.
He said that Islamabad had yet to change its policy towards Afghanistan and Pakistan was unhappy with the Oct 9 presidential elections. Paying tributes to the late president the ANP leader said that Dr Najeeb was sincere with the Afghan nation and was very popular among Pakhtuns. He said that some big powers and neighbouring countries disliked the late president because of his policies.
The party senior vice-president Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour said that foreign countries did not want peace in Afghanistan and were trying to divide Afghan nation on ethnic and linguistic basis.
He said that foreign interference forced Soviet Union to send its forces in Kabul. The late president influenced the Soviet leadership to withdraw their forces from Afghanistan, he added.
He said that religious organizations, America and Pakistani establishment had always interfered in Afghanistan. He said that Taliban had deprived Pakhtun nation of a true leader.
Earlier the ANP demanded of the United Nations to punish the killers of Dr Najeeb. The party said that it was the responsibility the world body to provide safety to Dr Najeeb, but it failed in fulfilling its responsibility.
