SIALKOT, Sept 22: A victim of physical torture by husband and in-laws has been fighting for life at a hospital for the last couple of days. Maid Shakeela Bibi, who is being given free treatment at the Allama Iqbal Memorial Hospital, was severely tortured and burnt with kerosene by her husband Ansar, sister-in-law Tehmina and mother-in-law over some dispute at Bhaagowali-Qila Kalarwala village in the Pasrur tehsil few days ago.

Police had registered a case against her husband and members of his family involved in the incident, but have yet to arrest them. On the appeal of the victim, human rights activist Asma Jehangir reached Sialkot on Tuesday for her help and fight against the criminals. She also inquired after the woman, who is a mother of three.

Sialkot District Nazim Main Naeem Javed, Pakistan Council for Social Welfare and Human Rights chairman Ejaz Ahmad Noori and DCO Syed Tahir Raza Naqvi were also present. Ms Jehangir urged the district government to take stern action against the suspects. She pledged that the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan would make all-out efforts for providing complete security and justice to Shakeela Bibi.

ROBBERIES: Robbers plundered cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth Rs150,000 from passengers of a bus near Budhiyaan-Satrah village on Tuesday night.

Reports said four armed men boarded a bus (LXP-1211) in guise of passengers and held up the occupants, including women and children. They bagged cash, jewellery and other valuables and took to heels. Meanwhile, Sialkot DPO Nisar Ahmad Saroya has suspended the entire staff of Satrah police check post from service for negligence. A case has been instituted.
