ISLAMABAD, Sept 9: The Central Developmental Working Party (CDWP) of the federal government has approved the Rs180 million project of establishing the Institute of Communication Technologies at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro.

This was stated by Higher Education Commission (HEC) chairman Dr Attaur Rehman at an official meeting held on Wednesday, official sources told Dawn. Dr Ata had said the Institute of Communication Technologies would be established at Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, in the current financial year. The HEC, which would be executing the project, had taken the decision of establishing the new institute and had sent the project to the CDWP for approval.

Giving details of the project, HEC's director public relations Dr Rashid Mateen said keeping in view the tremendous growth in the telecom sector and low teledensity in the country, there would be greater scope and consumption of telecom engineers, experts, technicians and solution providers.

Therefore, the HEC had decided to augment the existing programme of Mehran University of Engineering Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, to produce quality telecom personnel in various specialized areas such as Mobile Wireless Communications, Terrestrial and Satellite Communication, Optical Fibre Communication, Multimedia and Networking under the umbrella of the Institute of Communication Technologies, he said.
