KARACHI, Aug 24: The Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR) of the University of Karachi on Tuesday awarded a PhD in Economics to a student, Shafiqur Rahman , while approving the admissions of 39 candidates to MPhil/PhD on the recommendations of the interview committees of concerned faculties.

The meeting held with the acting KU vice-chancellor, Prof Dr Muhammad Qaiser, in the chair also granted provisional MPhil course work admissions at the Institute of Space and Planetary Astrophysics (ISPA) in addition to approving the BASR sub-committee report regarding admission of a student, Amir Siddiqui, to MPhil at ISPA.

Some of the other decisions taken at the meeting included confirmations of 10 MPhil course work admissions, approval of 10 re-admissions and fresh admissions, and cancellation of admission of one candidate.

Two candidates were allowed to modify the topics of their research as per KU Academic Council's resolution No 5(4) dated February 19, 2004, while the meeting also allowed three candidates to change their supervisors.

The meeting also approved a report of the BASR sub-committee regarding admission of candidates with BDS degrees, allowed correction of date to Mr Waseem Ahmed Khan for PhD in Mathematics, while cases of five candidates were withheld till directives of the VC were received.

The case of Mr Khalid Mustafa for conversion of admission from MPhil/PhD to PhD on the basis of award of MPhil degree from the International Islamic University Islamabad was also approved, in addition to approval of a joint application of MS/MD candidate for mentioning specialty in his degree.

Speaking on the occasion, acting VC KU Dr Muhammad Qaiser urged teachers to compel students for getting higher education to meet the country's growing demands. - PPI
