ISLAMABAD, Aug 23: Information secretary of the Awami National Party (ANP) and former senator Zahid Khan has said the government should drop the idea of building Kalabagh Dam and start construction of Bhasha Dam.

Talking to Dawn at the Parliament House cafeteria here on Monday, the ANP leader said his party had no objection to construction of any dam other than Kalabagh Dam. "Announcement of Kalabagh Dam construction at this time will be like adding fuel to the fire," he said.

The former senator claimed that the present setup would collapse within two months as not even a single institution was functioning properly. Moreover, he said, three prime ministers were changed in a period of three months. He said now a person was being made prime minister who had no constituency in the country.

Criticizing the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA), he said the religious alliance had boycotted the election of the prime minister in a bid to make Shaukat Aziz prime minister unopposed.

He said the People's Party Parliamentarians and the Pakistan Muslim League-N had the right to field their candidates for the elections.

He said JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman's offer to help end the ongoing fighting with Al Qaeda-linked fighters in tribal areas had exposed the "true face" of the MMA.
