KARACHI: BCom syllabus likely to be modified

KARACHI, Aug 22: The University of Karachi is contemplating modification in the syllabus and system of examination pertaining to the BCom programme for college students.

Sources on campus said that a meeting of the board of studies of the commerce faculty was being convened next week to consider fresh proposals related to BCom admissions, examinations and improvement in the related course contents.

A meeting of the KU vice-chancellor and representatives of commerce subjects teachers was held recently to streamline and improve the commerce education system for degree colleges affiliated with the Karachi university, added the source.

According to joint secretary of the Commerce Lecturers and Professors' Association, the vice-chancellor, KU Dr Pirzada Qasim and chairperson of the varsity's commerce department Prof Dilshad Zafar had in principle agreed to the changes.

Recommendations of the association would now be taken up at various statutory bodies, including the board of faculty of commerce and the academic council of the varsity.

The CLPA had also proposed to the university authorities to modify the syllabus, following which the VC ordered constitution of a committee so that the matter could be expedited and implemented at the earliest.

After approval from the academic council, a workshop for commerce professors would also be held to devise changes in the examination papers pertaining to degree classes. The teachers' body also suggested holding supplementary examinations of commerce degree classes from the forthcoming session to save the time of students.

"BCom is a professional degree and it would be appropriate to allow supplementary examinations for college students as was permissible in the case of other professional subjects' examinations," said joint secretary of association Prof M.A. Raheem.

It was also decided in the meeting with the vice-chancellor that the admission process for degree classes would be started in mid November 2004, so that students could get six or seven months for taking classes at the colleges, and so that the prescribed courses be completed.

It had also been agreed that a codification of the examination scripts and centralized system of assessment be introduced for BCom exams. The delegation of the teaches included Prof Aslam Khan, Prof Shahab Haider, Prof Mumtaz Anwar, Prof Asma Anjum, Prof Abdul Khaliq.
