KARACHI: Robber killed in encounter

KARACHI, Aug 5: An unidentified robber was shot dead in what police claimed to be an encounter in Mehmoodabad on Thursday. Police said three armed suspects came to a cell phone shop in Kashmir Colony No 3 Mehmoodabad, however, area people informed the police on 15.

As the suspects were fleeing, police mobiles of Mehmoodabad and Defence police stations rushed to the spot and an exchange of fire took place. Subsequently, an unidentified robber died on the spot while his two accomplices managed to escape. Police recovered a pistol and some valuables from the dead robber's possession.

SUICIDE: A young man committed suicide in his house in Landhi on Thursday. Police said Arshad Ali, 32, hanged himself from the ceiling fan, adding he was jobless for the last several years.

ELECTROCUTED: A young boy was electrocuted when he touched electric wires while flying a kite in Lyari on Thursday. Police said Shakir Abbas, 12, was flying a kite on the roof of his house in Chakiwara when he suffered a jolt from the electric wires passing close by. His body was taken to Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

WOUNDED: A policeman and his brother were wounded when they tried to resist a robbery bid in North Karachi early Thursday morning. Police said ASI Abdul Majeed and his brother tried to resist two armed suspects, who had barged into their house in North Karachi, Sector 5-D. The robbers opened fire, wounding both and escaped after the incident.

LOOTED: A transporter was deprived of Rs150,000 by two armed suspects from Mauripur truck stand on Thursday. Rana Nazim Husain, chairman, traffic, law and order committee of the Karachi Goods Carriers Association told Dawn that Mr Saud Khalid of Chaudhry Cargo after withdrawing Rs150,000 cash from the Hyderi branch of Faysal Bank came to his office where two armed suspects deprived him of the cash.

The two suspects who fled on a motorcycle delivered the cash at a short distance to a Suzuki Cultus. Mr Rana said they chased the suspects, but failed to catch them. An FIR 187/2004 was lodged Mauripur police station.

CRUSHED: An unidentified woman died after she was crushed by a locomotive in Malir. Police said the woman was crossing the railway track when the train hit her. Her body was shifted to the JPMC for autopsy examination.
