HYDERABAD, July 29: Prof (Dr) Abdul Qadir Mughal, member of the Higher Education Commission, education and research division, has said the commission will make available 650,000 textbooks of international standard in the next three years.
Speaking at a meeting of faculty members of the Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, on Thursday, he said at least 100,000 students would be granted admissions for higher education every year.
He said the government had allocated a huge amount of Rs170 million for research and 1,350 scholarships had been placed at the disposal of the commission for the training of university teachers.
Mr Mughal said teachers would be provided an opportunity for training within and outside the country. He said under the indigenous programme 5,000 scholarships for Ph.D candidates had been earmarked and arrangement had also been made for 22,000 fellowships.
Mr Mughal said under new arrangements, admissions would be available to 1,500 Ph.D candidates instead of 1,200 candidates. He said in addition to the above programme, 200 merit scholarships would be made available by the commission whereas 800 scholarships had already been offered by other countries.
Dr Mughal said the HEC had launched 30,000 journals of international standards on the Internet under the digital library programme. He said total contents of 1,160 journals had also been made available on the Internet.
He said these measures would help scholars and students in their studies and research. Dr Mughal announced outstanding teachers and researchers would be given research productivity allowance and science and technology allowance.
Not only this, he said, their income would be exempted from income tax and two teachers would be given the best teacher award every year. He said the commission would also give travel grant to those scholars who attended conferences abroad.
He said during the preceding year 94 such grants were given. The vice-chancellor of the university, Prof (Dr) Bashir Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
SU: The vice-chancellor of the University of Sindh, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui has urged the university teachers to work hard and set a good example before their juniors. He was presiding over a meeting of heads of institutes and departments of the faculty of social sciences on Wednesday.
Mr Siddiqui said the presence of heads of institutes and departments for two days a week during summer vacations was essential to provide guidance to students and helping the administration.
The meeting discussed results of semester examinations of various departments which had not submitted results to the controller of examinations. Most of the department heads stated they had handed over results of semester examinations to the office of the controller of examinations within due date while remaining departments assured for submitting the results within two days.
The meeting decided to display results on notice boards for the information of students.
QUIZ COMPETITION: The adviser of the bureau of students, tutorial, guidance/counselling services and co-curricular activities, Sindh University, announced on Wednesday for the information of all students of the university that the Pakistan Navel Academy was organizing an All-Pakistan Science Quiz Competition on Sept 6.
Interested candidates have been advised to contact heads of their departments. Selection of students in quiz competition from the University of Sindh will be finalized on Aug 3.
