KARACHI: Policeman killed in encounter

KARACHI, July 29: A policeman died in an encounter with the robbers, who were escaping after looting four shops in Liaqatabad jewellry market on Thursday. Police said that at least nine armed suspects came to the Al-Faisal Jewellers in the market and held the inmates hostage at gunpoint.

They collected jewellry, cash and cell phone from the shop and fled. The robbers also looted three other shops in the market, the police added. As the robbers were leaving the market premises, a mobile of the Sharifabad police approached the scene by chance.

The robbers opened fire at the police hitting a head constable, Inyat Ali, who was driving the mobile, the police claimed, adding that in retaliatory fire by the police one of the suspect was wounded, but the robbers managed to fled from the spot. The police found a motorcycle which the suspects left while escaping.

DROWNING: A man and his six-year-old son drowned while picnicking at the Sonara Beach on Thursday. The in charge of the Hawksbay rescue centre of the city government, Zafar Khan, told Dawn that the incident occurred in the afternoon when a family came there for picnic.

He said that Wahid Ahmed Chohan, 6, was swept away while playing in the water. His father Abrar Ahmed Chohan, 32, dived into the water to save him but also drowned in the rough sea.

The drowning incident came when four beaches, including Sonara point, have been closed till September by the city government. Due to week day, police and other officials were not present at the point to stop the picnickers from visiting the beach, Mr Khan said.

SHOT DEAD: A young man was shot dead and his associate was injured when unknown persons on motorcycles opened fire at them in Lyari late on Wednesday night. Following the incident, the enraged area people set on fire a police mobile which was parked at a nearby auto workshop in the limits of Chakiwara police station.

Police said that Jehangir, 40, along with his friend Fida Husain, 32, were sitting near a petrol pump when four persons on two motorcycles opened fire on them and fled. Both the injured were taken to the Civil Hospital, where Jehangir was pronounced dead.

ACCIDENT: Three persons died in separate road accidents in different parts of the city on Thursday. A sixty-year-old man died when he got crushed under the wheels of a bus from which he was disembarking in Malir on Thursday.

Police said that the unidentified victim had came to the city from Thatta. His body was sent to the JPMC, from where it was shifted to the Edhi morgue for identification. A motorcyclist, Qadeer Khan, was knocked down by a trailer at Mauripur Road.

Police said that Qadeer was on his motorcycle (KCQ-9707) when he was knocked down by a trailer (LSA 3031). The victim was taken to the Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police arrested the driver of the long vehicle. In another accident in Keamari, a student of class 6 died when he was knocked down by a trailer. Police said that Pervaiz was crossing over a main road when he was knocked down by a trailer (LSC-1191). The young boy died on the spot.

ARRESTED: The Defence police on Thursday arrested three suspects who were roaming in a yellow cab in the Phase-II commercial extension. The police said that they intercepted a yellow cab (PL-4123) and arrested Faisal Saeed, Mohammad Usman and Abdul Rehman. Police recovered a TT pistols from their possession.

The suspects were roaming in the area with an intention to commit a dacoity, police claimed. In another incident, a suspect was arrested by the police at Akthar Colony traffic section. The police said that the suspects was involved in a motorcycle snatching bid. A TT pistol was also recovered from his possession.

Police on Thursday arrested 18 persons from the Saddar Dawakhana area and booked them under section 139- obstruction of main roads, under police order. Saddar ASP Kashif Kanju told Dawn that following an anti-encroachment drive in Preedy area, a number of hawkers had occupied the Saddar Dawakhana Road.
