PESHAWAR, July 27: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (Unama) will open its office in Peshawar next week to resume registration of refugees so that they can exercise their right of franchise in the upcoming presidential elections in the war-ravaged country, official sources said.

The Peshawar-based head of the Afghan Constitution Drafting Commission (ACDC), Zahir Khan Jabarkhel, told Dawn on Tuesday that Unama team would arrive in the city next week.

He said the ACDC would monitor verification and registration of refugee voters, living in various camps and urban areas across the country. Islamabad has already assured Kabul of its cooperation in the registration of refugee voters.

Officials estimated that about 800,000 refugees are eligible to be registered as voters. Women have been exempted from affixing photographs on the voter forms.
