SUKKUR, July 26: Residents of the Jan Mohammad Society blocked the National Highway and the railway track near Ghotki on Monday to protest against the killing of two persons on Sunday night.
The protesters blocked the railway track for two hours due to which the Karachi-bound Super Express, Awam Express and Tezrao Express were stopped outside the Ghotki railway station.
Extra police force and railway employees were called who managed to clear the track after a scuffle with the protesters. Later, the protesting villagers blocked the highway for five hours.
Ghotki DPO Aftab Halepoto, along with a heavy contingent of police, rushed to the area and negotiated with representatives of the protesters but they refused to end the blockade.
Later, elders of Jan Mohammad Society talked to the district nazim in Karachi who told them that three policemen had been suspended and another had been arrested for negligence in duty. The nazim also assured them that the killers would soon be arrested.
On this assurance, the protesters ended the blockade. Five persons on Sunday night had attacked the Jan Mohammad Society and fired indiscriminately, killing Bashir Ahmad Arain and Abdul Qadir Arain.
Police said one week back, Mevo Chachar had opened fire on Mohammad Aslam Arain, who narrowly escaped. Later, Mevo was arrested on the charge of attempted murder, on complaint of residents of Jan Mohammad Society. Apparently in retaliation supporters of Mevo allegedly attacked the village, killing the two men.
The DPO said Adilpur SHO Ghulam Nabi Mahar, additional SHO Mohammad Nawaz Bajwa and head constable Nabi Bux had been suspended and Arif Mahar, in charge of the police post of Jan Mohammad Society, had been arrested for negligence in duty. No FIR was registered till the filing of this report.
