QUETTA, July 16: The site of the under-construction Mirani dam was rocked in the early hours of Friday when over a dozen rockets exploded in the residential area of the project, some 50Km from the Turbat city.
The rockets, along with hundreds of rounds of automatic weapons, were fired by unknown people from the nearby Mirani mountains. At least three houses, an officers mess and generator room were damaged in the incident, a senior official of the Turbat administration told Dawn on telephone from Turbat. But no one was killed or wounded in the attack, he added.
Sources said that around half a dozen armed people came to the project site at around 3.30am in two vehicles and started firing rockets towards the residential area of Mirani dam project. Many rockets landed in the open area while three exploded near the residential area and damaged some houses, a mess and generator room.
Some attackers took positions at the Mirani mountains and fired hundreds of rounds towards the same site using automatic weapons. "Unknown people fired 14 rockets at the project site," official sources said, adding that they also fired around 500 rounds and fled in their vehicles.
Soon after the incident, the official concerned rushed to the site along with heavy contingent of levies and other law enforcement agencies.
