LAHORE, July 9: Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi has sought a report on corruption charges levelled by opposition against Allama Iqbal Town Nazim Sardar Adil Omar.

The mover of the no-confidence motion against the Nazim, Rana Faryad Ali and seconder Chaudhry Faiz Rasool were informed about the chief minister's directions at the Punjab Local Government Complex here on Friday.

They said Law and Local Government Minister Raja Basharat and Agriculture Minister Arshad Lodhi would look into the charges and submit a report to the chief minister in three days.

They claimed that the town had suffered a Rs300 million loss as a result of the alleged irregularities committed during the last three years. Contracts had been awarded in violation of rules and payments made for the roads built by the Lahore Development Authority in Manga Mandi, Allama Iqbal Town, Sabzazar, Mustafa Town and Johar Town and PWD in Wahdat Colony and Federal Colony. A Rs300 streetlight set had been purchased for Rs700.

Transfer of property fee contract had not been revised upwards despite increase in the minimum prescribed rates while slaughterhouse contract had been awarded without observing the prescribed formalities.

Opposition members gathered at the town office on Friday afternoon but could not hold a meeting "to take up the leftover agenda of Tuesday's meeting" in view of chief minister's intervention in the matter.

The Nazim, on the other hand, said he had cancelled the meeting because it had not been authorized by him. He, however, left the town office along with a sizable number of supporters before the fixed time for the meeting, directing the staff to vacate the office.

Town Naib Nazim Mian Javed Ali and opposition members, however, refused to leave the office and remained their till evening. Mian Javed said the no-confidence motion and the chargesheet against the Nazim presented at the council and adopted on Tuesday had been submitted to the local government department.
