BASTAD, July 8: French Open champion Gaston Gaudio became the fourth Argentine to reach the Swedish Open quarterfinals following a 4-6 6-3 6-2 win over Frenchman Olivier Patience on Thursday.

The second seed joined compatriot Juan Ignacio Chela, Juan Monaco and defending champion Mariano Zabaleta in the last eight. Chela beat Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-4 7-5 earlier in the day.

Gaudio will face tough opposition in his next match as he takes on Spanish teenager Rafael Nadal, who outclassed his compatriot Santiago Ventura 6-1 6-2. Chela will face Swede Robin Soderling, who kept home hopes alive by beating Spanish fifth seed Tommy Robredo 6-0 4-6 6-3.
