KARACHI, June 29: Bandits on Tuesday took away 41 vehicles including nine cars and 32 motorbikes from various parts of the city.

Tuesday appeared a field day for bandits, as they faced almost no resistance and hijacked six cars and stole three others from various localities. They also snatched 15 motorcycles at gunpoint and stole 17 others, said police sources.

SHOT DEAD: A former police official was shot dead and his associate was wounded when unknown men opened fire at them in Baldia Town on Tuesday night. Police said that unknown persons on a motorcycle opened fire at Nasir Bangash, a dismissed assistant sub-inspector, and his friend Hanif at Baldia 4-1/2.

The assailants escaped following the attack. Nasir Bangash suffering a bullet wound in his head died on the spot while Hanif suffered a bullet in abdomen. The dead and the injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital.

Hospital sources said that no official from the Baldia police station had reached the hospital for legal formalities. Till filing of this report, postmortem examination was not carried out.

SUICIDE: An under-trial prisoner allegedly committed suicide in Central Jail on Tuesday. Police said that Anwer, 35, committed suicide by hanging himself in the washroom, located in the prisoners barrack.

Police claimed that the suspect used a long handkerchief for the hanging purpose. The suspect was facing trial under Arms Ordinance, besides several other cases. According to the New Town police, the suspect was arrested four months back.

After completing legal formalities at the Central Prison Karachi, a magistrate told the New Town police to shift the body to the Civil Hospital for postmortem examination.

ENCOUNTER: Police arrested two suspects after exchange of fire in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Tuesday. A police official and a suspect were wounded in the shootout. Police said that two suspects entered a marble shop in Gulistan-i-Jauhar.

After looting Rs3,000 and a cellular phone at gunpoint from the shop, they escaped. Shortly afterwards, they barged into another shop in Gulshan Arcade with intention to commit a robbery. In the meantime, the marble shop owner informed the police.

ASI Zia rushed to the shop and saw the two suspects fleeing from the spot. As the police official asked the suspects to stop, they opened fire. The policeman, who suffered bullet wound, returned the fire injuring one of the suspects, Nadeem. Subsequently, police arrested the injured Nadeem and his accomplice Ashiq Ali and recovered two TT pistols from their possession.

RECOVERED: Bodies of two drowning victims were recovered from different places on Tuesday. The body of a seven-year-old girl, who had been swept away by strong waves from Manora Island on Sunday, was washed ashore at Clifton Beach on Tuesday.

Edhi sources said that Saima along with another girl and a woman were swept away by strong waves on Sunday. The woman and the girl were rescued on the same day, however, the body of Saima could not be recovered.
