RAWALPINDI, May 21: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) would finance water supply schemes in Rawalpindi district, sources in the bank said on Tuesday.
Rawalpindi district is one of the beneficiaries of the Rs4 billion Community Water Supply and Sanitation project initiated by the bank in 51 Tehsils of the Barani tract of Punjab and regions with brackish water.
Under this project new schemes would be started and those out of order would be made functional.
The bank sources said the Tehsil administration is a major stakeholder in the project and it has been asked to identify the schemes according to its priorities. The project would be managed through Project Management Unit.
They said the project will help in capacity building of the Tehsil administration with respect to administrative and financial affairs.
“The Tehsil administration would be assisted in developing Management Information System (MIS),” they said. It is for the first time that capacity building of Tehsil administration was being introduced.
The major focus of the project would be poverty alleviation and introduction of income generation schemes for the people of the area, particularly women.
APP adds: A fact-finding mission of the ADB headed by Werner E Liepach, Senior Financial/Capital Markets specialist, Governance, Finance and Trade Division, South Asia Department held a meeting with the Minister for Labour and Manpower, Owais Ghani.
The mission discussed the issues relating to capital market, pension and provident fund.
The functioning of Employees Old Age Benefits Institute (EOBI) was also discussed. It was felt that there was a need to improve the functioning of the EOBI in order to reduce administrative cost by right-sizing the EOBI.
The issue of strengthening of the EOBI scheme to ensure its long term viability and sustainability was discussed, it was also said the EOBI fund needed to be managed by professional fund managers.
The minister said tough decisions are being taken to improve the functioning and viability of EOBI.
The ADB mission promised that they are ready to provide minimum technical assistance to implement the right decisions taken by the government.
The possibility of providing consultancy services to manage the EOBI fund by a fund management company was also discussed.
