Nomi makes short work of Khalid in final
KARACHI, June 13: Top seed Nomi Qamar picked up the spoils in the second Caltex Open ranking tennis championship making short work of second seed Khalid Ali Nazar 6-1, 6-1, on the Salma Noorani court before a jampacked audience at the Karachi Club hard courts on Sunday.
The Pakistan No.2 and former Davis Cup star, never let his nervous opponent settle down, attacking tennis with both forehand and double fisted backhand smashes, Nomi was content to cash in on Khalid's numerous unforced errors.
Zarmeen Shoaib was crowned the Ladies champion with an easy 6-2, 6-1 tiumph over Syed Aley Zehra who try as much as she could, just failed to turn the tide. Joining forces with Asad Ali Bhagat in the Men's doubles final, Nomi picked up another trophy. But the top seeds had to work overtime in taming the combination of Khalid Ali Nazi and the powerful left-hander Adnan Khan 6-4, 6-4.
Nasir Khan had to break into a sweat in over coming the challenge of Danish Ahmed 6-4, 6-2. But Talha Dar a youngster from Hyderabad had to bring out all his reserves on a hot and humid afternoon while finally coming through victorious against Jahangir Rasheed 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
Ghulam Abbas seemed quite content with his victory in the Under-13 singles final, brushing aside Mustafa Jumali 6-2, 6-1. Earlier in the morning, Ghulam was rather dismayed when he and his partner Nasir Mushtaq, the favourites to win the title, went down to Asgher Bandeali and Daniyal Alvi in three gruelling sets 6-2, 5-7, 7-6. an interesting match that went to the wire.
Daniyal and his partner Asgher, drenched to the bone with sweat, were absolutely delighted in their hard fought victory, in a match that could have swung either way.
Zubair Raza was another contented youngster, breezing through the Under-11 finals 6-0, 6-0 against Zarrukh Baig. The veterans doubles was another match that had its full share of spills and thrills, where the Pak Canadian Sohail Kiani and his partner Humayun Zafer finally prevailed over Col Asif Dar and Gul Hameed 6-2, 6-3.
Kiani scored plenty of points close to the net, while Humuyan was at his best scoring from the baseline.
