Sohail eyes Olympic gold in Athens

CANNOCK, June 7: Pakistan's penalty corner expert Sohail Abbas said on Monday achieving the gold medal at Olympics was his main objective rather than accomplishing personal records.

"Hockey is a team game and not an individual sport. If we win, everyone gets the credit while whole team has to face criticism if we lose," Sohail said. "I can sacrifice all my personal records for the success of the team. Records are meaningless if your team doesn't reach the top," he opined.

Interestingly, despite being rated as the finest penalty corner striker in the world, Sohail considered himself as the weakest player of the team. "That is my personal opinion which urges me to work harder," he said.

Sohail called for moral support of his countrymen. "No team can guarantee a success in all matches. So if we lose, we need backing of the whole nation." "Pakistan's Dutch coach Roelant Oltmans has revolutionized hockey concept in our team, he said. "Training on scientific lines has given us a new dimension in the sport."

He said besides coaches, according to new concept, goal keeper also motivate the team during matches. Sohail rated Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Australia, Argentina and Korea dangerous teams at the August Athens Olympics. -APP
