KARACHI, June 4: The few administrative changes made in the police department will not bring about much improvement in the law and order situation in Karachi, said Senator Prof Ghafoor Ahmed at a press conference held at Idara-i-Noor-i-Haq on Friday.
Prof Ghafoor, naib amir of Jamaat-i-Islami and a central leader of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, said Sindh required a representative government, not a national one. The nationwide strike on Friday had shown that Pakistanis were united.
Pakistan had been created because of unity among Muslims, and it was unity which would keep it intact, he added. During the strike, he said, the country as a whole had shown solidarity with the people of Karachi.
The strike had shown that Shias and Sunnis were united, as always. In the wake of the bomb blasts at the Hyderi Mosque and Imambargah Ali Raza and the assassination of Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai, too, the Shias and Sunnis had displayed exemplary unity.
The press briefing was also addressed by Allama Hasan Turabi, Maulana Abdul Karim Abid, Hafiz Muhammad Taqi and Hashim Siddiqui. Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui and Sarfaraz Ahmed were also present.
Prof Ghafoor urged the government to save Karachi from the people who had taken it hostage at gunpoint. "Let the government take practical steps to improve the situation instead of just paying lip service," he remarked.
The government had announced time and again that some worthwhile steps would be taken to handle the difficult situation but no such action was taken yet. "Courageous steps are needed," the JI leader said.
The MMA was demanding the removal of the governor, not the chief minister, he said. Cases of robberies and kidnapping for ransom occurred as a routine in the city, which could not be handled through hastily taken measures, said Prof Ghafoor.
Karachi, being the commercial and industrial hub of the country, was being targeted by those who wanted to create chaos and lawlessness in Pakistan, said the JI naib amir of.
If the situation was not brought under control quickly, a flight of capital would take place and there would be no investment in the country. However, he said, the enemy would never succeed in its nefarious designs even though some terrorists had succeeded in keeping the provincial administration at gunpoint.
Prof Ghafoor said mayhem was let loose during the by-elections in Karachi, demanding fresh elections be held as soon as possible. He claimed whatever was transpiring in Karachi was being planned at the Governor House, and the people who were involved were being protected by the governor.
Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Karachi Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui, praised and thanked the people of Karachi for making MMA's peaceful strike a success. The strike had shown that the people behind the recent violent actions were not supported by the populace.
Allama Hasan Turabi said that Sunnis and Shias had expressed great unity during the incidents of the assassination of Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai and bomb blasts at Imambargahs. "The people of Sindh demand for freeing province from the clutches of terrorists," he added.
PROTEST RALLY: American agents, in an effort to implement its agenda, were perpetrating violent actions in Karachi, said speakers during a protest rally held in Landhi.
The people behind the recent bombings and the assassination of Mufti Shamzai wanted to create insurmountable problems between the Shias and Sunnis, but MMA's strike had helped foil their designs.
Not only do the common Shias and Sunnis stand united today but the religious leaders, representing various schools of thought, also stand united said Prof Ghafoor. Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui, Maulana Ehsanullah Hazarvi, Mufti Munib-ur-Rehman, Aslam Mujahid, Maulana Umar Farooqui, Maulana Rafiullah Shirazi, Dr Ataullah and Maulana Shafiqur Rehman also spoke.
