KARACHI, May 28: Yet another child - five-year-old Ahmed - lost his life after falling into a ditch dug up in Abbysinnya Lines' Sector 8-B in connection with under-construction FTC Flyover.

He was the third child of the same locality who died on Thursday after falling into the ditch. An eight-year-old girl, Yasmeen had lost her life in April and a four-year-old boy had died in February.

The locality's Nazim (UC-6 of Jamshed Town), Mehfooz-un-Nabi, told Dawn that the ditches, which were dug up about four or five months back in Abbysinnya Lines' Sector 8-B for constructing the FTC Flyover's ramp, were still lying unfilled despite the fact these ditches had claimed three lives.

He said that family of the first victim was so terrified after the incident that they shifted to some other locality. Talking about the victim of second incident occurred in April, he said that she belonged to a very poor family. "Yasmeen's family is so poor that even the funeral arrangements for her were made by the area residents," he added.

Mehfooz-un-Nabi claimed that he had requested the city district government's works and services department to give adequate compensation to parents of all the three victims. However, he pointed out that nothing had been done so far in this regard.

He also demanded of the city nazim to direct the officials of the constructing firm to fill those ditches without any delay, otherwise, some more children might become victim of the same.
