Wanted man killed in ‘encounter’

SHEIKHUPURA, May 20: A proclaimed offender was killed in an encounter near Phularwan Chowk, some 36km away from here, on Monday.

ASP Saddar Mirza Faran Beg told newsmen here that three accomplices of Zahid escaped.

He said that a Farooqabad Saddar police party on patrol signalled four men in a car (FDX 7936) to halt on Sangla Hill Road. The occupants opened fire, police retaliated. As a result, Zahid died on the spot while his three accomplices escaped.

The ASP said that Zahid had escaped from Gujranwala some time ago after breaking the jail’s van.

Zahid had gunned down ASI Asad Muzaffar of Farooqabad Saddar police in a dacoity attempt on Sharaqpur Road. The car used by the criminals in the encounter was snatched from Dr Israr Ahmad.

The ASP said that Zahid was wanted in dozens of heinous crimes by Gujranwala, Kamoki and Sheikhupura police.

A Kalashnikov and other illegal weapons were also recovered from the car. Raids were being conducted for the arrest of the absconding criminals, the ASP said.

The ASP said that he himself supervised the encounter which lasted for about two hours.

SHOT DEAD: A student of 11th class was shot dead over an old enmity in Bharianwala village, some 12km away from here, on Monday morning.

Sajid was standing in front of his house when Amjad and his three accomplices came there and opened fire. Sajid died on the spot.

Police said that Sajid’s family had an old enmity with Amjad family. Dozen of people from both sides had been killed during the last few years.

Bhekhi police registered a case against Amjad who was at large.
