Heated debate on NSC likely in Senate

ISLAMABAD, April 28: The senate session, scheduled to be summoned on opposition's requisition on May 4, is likely to be dominated by heated debates mainly on the setting up of the National Security Council, opposition members said.

Senator Khurshid Ahmed of the MMA said that the opposition had given a three-point agenda that includes a debate on consequences of the NSC, the bulldozing of the house committees in favour of treasury members and lastly the economic issues, including price hike, unemployment and growing poverty.

He accused the government of having violated rules and parliamentary traditions while constituting house committees as well as in the election of their chairmen.

The government, he said, had given the opposition four against eight treasury members while proportionate distribution would have been 7-5. Similarly, in the appointment of committee chairmen, he said, the opposition had been totally ignored.

He said the government had approached the MMA for a greater share in these committees leaving at the cost of other opposition parties, adding that the alliance had declined the offer and insisted on the equitable distribution among all opposition groups.

Referring to MMA vice president Maulana Samiul Haq and his son Hamidul Haq's acceptance of chairmanship of house committees in senate and the National Assembly Mr Ahmed said: "They have done so in violation of the alliance's policy and on PML-Q senators votes."

He hoped that the chairman senate would keep his word regarding giving the opposition "full opportunity" to put across its view point on all national issues and would "not use the weapon of prorogation".

Meanwhile, Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the combined opposition has planned to express its view on NSC and its various consequences. He said apart from three-point agenda of the combined opposition, it was the responsibility of the government to give its agenda to run the house.

The opposition, he said, would give a tough time to the government on current issues of national importance and would not allow the house to be adjourned midway through and would again requisition if the government resorted to such a move.
