SAF dope-test results may be released next week

ISLAMABAD, April 9: Results of more than 100 dope-tests conducted during the 9th SAF Games will be consolidated by Sunday and are likely to be announced next week.

"We shall finalize all results by April 10," said director Medical 9th SAF Games, Col Khalid Hussain on Friday.

He said the entire dope-testing process took place in a smooth manner with athletes extending full cooperation as a doctor each from all the participating countries was present to monitor it.

Tests were conducted on each medal winner and at random on some other players also, before they were sent to an approved laboratory in Bangkok, which had to send results within five days.

The procedure was stated to be fully transparent in keeping with standards of World Anti Doping Agency and International Olympic Committee. Khalid said the dope-tests committee had sent more than 100 samples, the results of most of which have been received.

However, the announcement about any positive results would be made by the concerned authority in due course of time, he said. As many as 32 local doctors were involved in taking samples, assisted by 24 odd volunteers who also helped in transportation of samples straight to Bangkok.

Customs officials as well as employees of a courier company were present at Pakistan Sports Complex to ensure quick passage of samples to Bangkok, with seals intact. Khalid said the SAF Games was the first major sports event in the region to implement a modern and elaborate system of dope-testing. -APP
