LAHORE, May 19: Of the 14,623 professionals and skilled people in 70 categories registered at the 34 one-man employment exchanges in the Punjab since their revival in August last year, 4,878 have been provided jobs.

IT professionals and MBAs are not being registered since they are not mentioned in the Essential Personnel Ordinance, 1948, although cooks, tailors and sweepers are.

There are a very limited number of jobs for engineers and doctors but the employment exchanges work well for technicians and skilled people. The number of jobs provided was lower than in the past primarily on account of the limited number of jobs available due to general unemployment and downsizing in government departments.

None of the 136 mechanical engineers and 98 electronics engineers approaching the employment exchanges got a job. Three of the 90 food supervisors, however, got the jobs and there were no applicants for three vacancies of catering officers.

Two of the 15 unemployed surgeons and one of the 63 physicians got jobs. Only one radiologist came looking for employment. He got a job. No pathologist was, however, available for two vacancies. Of the 235 nurses, 142 were provided jobs. Of 856 medical officers seeking jobs, 92 got employment.

Only three anaesthetists were available for 20 vacancies. Only five dispensers got the jobs out of 126 applicants. Only one ENT specialist contacted the employment exchanges for a job and got employed. There was no applicant for a single vacancy for a dermatologist. Only one ophthalmologist out of eight got employment.

Only one instrument fitter got a job out of 282 and six gauge and tool fitters out of 176. Ten engine drivers got employment out of 13 applicants. Only three refrigerator mechanics got jobs out of 251. Three oxy-acetylene welders were employed out of 181. Of the 497 electrical welders, 39 were provided jobs. Five electricians were also employed out of 1,906 approaching the exchanges. Eight ferro spray painters got employed out of 40 and 21 carpenters out of 70.

Two of the 32 saddlers got the jobs and two stenographers out of 191. The exchanges received demands for five shipwrights but none was available for employment. Of the 52 telecommunication mechanics, 38 got jobs. Only 10 gardeners and guards got the jobs out of 469 applicants. Of the 461 tailors, 65 were provided employment whereas 13 fire leaders got the jobs out of 43. Three draughtsmen got jobs out of 124 applicants whereas only 658 heavy motor drivers were available for 2,112 vacancies. Not even a single teleprinter operator could get a job out of 14. Of the 315 MTGs and 72 DP assistants only one from the each category got employed.

The employment exchanges received demand for 130 washing and drying machine operators but only 15 were available. Of the 174 shoemakers and 212 cooks seeking employment 103 and 86 got jobs, respectively. Of the 1,086 sweepers, 726 were provided employment whereas only 122 storekeepers were available for 306 jobs.

Four radar fitters and three watchmakers got employment out of 13 and 40 applicants, respectively. Only one MT Fitter got a job out of 205 and four carpenters out of 77. Three of the sub-inspectors got employed out of 130 and 8 police constables out of 57. Of the 58 assistant directors, 14 got employed.

There were only two applicants for 70 jobs of superintendents and assistants. No religious teacher was available for appointment against two vacancies. Five washermen got jobs out of 39 applicants. Of 35 fero operators, 13 got jobs but only 55 daftris (office helpers) were available for 471 vacancies.

Only one lascar was available for 111 vacancies. One bird shooter got a job out of four. Only two bricklayers were available for 10 vacancies and four photostat machine operators for five vacancies. Five record sorters were available for 13 vacancies. Only five ward orderlies got jobs out of 48 applicants and one chartist out of two.

Only one receptionist was available for 30 vacancies but 2,376 stretcher bearers for 40 jobs. Five out of 13 field assistants were provided employment. Only one vacancy each of the lower division clerk and naib qasid was reported. Nobody had applied for the jobs. Only three of the GST (Gestetner) operators got jobs out of 1,576 registered.
