Badam Gul wins first gold for Afghanistan

RAWALPINDI April 5: Afghanistan's Taekwondo player Badam Gul became the first person to win a gold medal for his country at the 9th SAF games. Badam Gul, 26 , clinched the gold medal in the heavyweight category of the taekwondo event by defeating Pakistan's Hanif Haider by 10-2 points at Army stadium on Monday.

A native of Jalalabad, Badam Gul overpowered Hanif Haider who never looked in command and played tiredly in the last two rounds. Meanwhile, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan won one gold medal each in the taekwondo event.

Pakistan's Faisal Mehmood won gold medal in the welter weight category. Tashi Drukpa Bhutan clinched the silver medal while Srilanka and Nepal were awarded bronze medal in the same category.

In the women Bantamweight category, Renuka Magar won the gold medal, kinley Bidha gained silver medal while bronze medals were awarded to Pakistan and Afghanistan of Bhutan.

In the men's middleweight category, Sonam Ponjuor of Nepal won gold medal while Pakistan's Akhtar Malik got silver medal. Bronze medal went to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the same category. -APP
