KARACHI, March 26: Sindh Minister for Education Irfanullah Khan Marwat has hinted at allotment of a piece of land at half rate to anyone willing to establish a school to help promote literacy further.

He was speaking at the award distribution ceremony of a private school here on Friday. Mr Marwat said that due to poor condition of educational institutions the standard of education had fallen.

"It is one of the priorities of this government to provide all facilities to the students in their respective institutions so that they could fully concentrate on education", he said.

Both the public and private sector institutions do realize their responsibility towards education and they play an important role in its promotion, he remarked.

The minister pointed out that it was the government's policy to award scholarships to poor and deserving students for higher education so that they could secure jobs soon after graduation.

He congratulated the students, as well as their parents and teachers, who showed excellence in their academic activities, and assured them of his full cooperation in solving their education-related problems.

In this regard, he said that a summary of the demands, concerning facilities and incentives for teachers and students, had been forwarded to the provincial chief secretary for an approval from the chief minister.

He regretted that the summary had unfortunately been forwarded earlier to the finance secretary instead of the CM. However, he added, he had written to the finance secretary to take necessary action on the contents of the summary besides approving a budget of seven million rupees to facilitate lecturers' promotion.

Another summary, concerning promotion of the director of physical education and librarians, had also been forwarded to the chief secretary's office where it was lying for action. A separate letter had been written for the approval of the summary, he added.

Mr Marwat said that all the demands presented by the All Sindh Primary Teachers Association regarding finance had already been forwarded to the finance department and a reminder for a favour was also issued. -APP/PPI
