KARACHI, March 24: Sindh Chief Secretary Mutawakkil Kazi on Wednesday visited various markets and was surprised to see that beef was being sold at Rs130 to Rs150 per kilogram and mutton at Rs200 to Rs250 per kilo.

He expressed concern over the exorbitant increase in the prices of vegetables, fruits, bakery products and other food items. Later, he directed the authorities concerned to initiate effective steps to bring the prices of essential commodities under control and take action against profiteers, hoarders and those creating artificial shortages.

He directed the relevant departments to keep strict watch on the prices of items of daily use in the greater public interest and also called for action against officials who showed leniency to unscrupulous elements.

Dr Kazi said it should be made binding on shopkeepers to display price lists duly authenticated by the department concerned and action be taken against those indulging in price hike.

He asked the district coordination officer of Karachi to take effective steps for stabilising milk prices and told the secretary for food to promote liaison with the stake-holders for stabilising the atta prices. - APP
