PESHAWAR, March 10: Speakers at a seminar on Wednesday urged the government to adopt legislative and administrative measures for combating killings in the name of honour.

The seminar was organized by an NGO, Shirkatgah, in connection with International Women's Day. According to a press release, a former judge of the Supreme Court Justice (retd) Burhanuddin emphasized that the Hudood Ordinance be repealed and new laws be enacted from the beginning as "patchwork" of amendments "does not work in the context of laws."

He agreed with the recommendations of the report of the special committee, established by the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW). Justice (retd) Burhanuddin cited example of a case which came before him, to illustrate the "misuse of Hudood Laws to harass innocent people, especially women."

On the question of honour killing, he said that nobody was allowed to kill people after making flimsy allegations and all steps be taken to combat this brutal old practice.

The vice-president of ANP, Haji Muhammad Adeel condemned honour killing. He regretted that four years ago a senior leader of his party opposed a resolution in the Senate, which condemned this practice.
