KHAAR, Feb 29: A man was killed and seven others were injured when two rival tribes exchanged fire over a property dispute in the far-flung Chaharmang area.

Sources said on Sunday that the Hilalkhel and Qamarkhel tribes in Chaharmang area had developed differences over the ownership of a mountain in the area.

The sources said that when the Hilalkhel tribesmen tried to cut trees in the disputed area, the Qamarkhels attacked them, which led to intense firing between the two sides, killing one man on the spot. His name could not be known. Seven others were injured in the shootout.

Sources said that the tribesmen used modern weapons, including rockets, to pound each others positions.

A local official said that the political administration had arrested six people of the two tribes on violation of a cease-fire reached between the two tribes with the help of a tribal jirga recently. He said that the jirga had also imposed a fine of Rs2 million on the two tribes for violating the agreement.
