PESHAWAR, Feb 19: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has demanded of the government to curtail powers of the political administrators in Fata and make them accountable before the court of law.

In a statement issued here on Thursday the JI deputy general- secretary, Fata, Zer Noor Afridi, said that situation could not be changed in the tribal region unless proper check and balance system is introduced.

He alleged that the bureaucracy was involved in corruption and the agency political agents misused their powers, granted them under the 1901's Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR).

He dispelled the impression that law and order situation was satisfactory in the tribal region only because of the FCR. Mr Afridi said that the government should introduce reforms in the tribal areas, hold local bodies elections and transfer powers from the political agents to the elected agency councils.

He also demanded of the government to launch development activities in Fata and provide employment opportunities to the local population.
