HYDERABAD, May 17: The department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, organized a seminar in Jamshoro on Friday on World Telecommunication Day on the theme of “strong telecommunication infrastructure is the backbone of the country”.

In his opening speech, Prof B.S. Choudhry, chairman of the department, said that the emergence of the Internet had spawned enormous growth in technologies, standards and products beyond anyone’s imagination.

The chief guest, Arshad Kahn, chief executive, U-Phone, Pakistan, said that today more information was printed in 24 hours than in the entire period between the Spanish-American war of 1898 and the 1st World War of 1914.

He said that more than 200 million people possessed mobile phones and in the not too distant future, it would be possible to contact them anywhere in the world under a single phone number.

Dr. A.Q.K. Rajput, acting vice chancellor, MUET, said that they wanted to turn the university into a leading telecommunication institute in the country through quality education, commitment and desire to bring about positive technological innovations that would help to add value in an industry that served as a backbone for infra-structural development.

Two technical papers on “Role of Telecommunication in 21st Century” and “Standard Code for Information Interch-ange in Sindhi Language” were presented by Prof Ahsan Ursani and Tayabuddin Memon respectively.
