LANDI KOTAL, Jan 20: Political and social circles have demanded of the authorities concerned to extend the date for new entries in the voters list to enable the maximum number of people to register their names in the new list.

The Khyber Agency political administration has claimed to have displayed the lists of voter at Bara, Jamrud and Landi Kotal tehsils of the agency for the general public.

Posters, urging general public to register and rectify their names in the list, were also pasted at market places and announcement were also made at various mosques, an official at Landi Kotal tehsil office told Dawn.

So far around 500 people have registered their names or applied for changes in the voters list, but political and social circles believe that a good number of potential voter were yet to register their names due to cold weather in the upper regions of Khyber.

Also a large number were yet to be informed as they live in far off areas like the remote Tirah valley. Nasrullah, a resident of Bara however, accused the political administration for not properly advertising the matter. He said that although voter lists were posted at the office of the Bara political tehsildar, but no announcements were made at public places nor were posters, urging the people to register themselves, were posted elsewhere in Bara.

He said that officials at the tehsil office were directing people to consult their nearby government schools for correction and registration, but no voters lists were displayed at these schools as the teaching staff refused to cooperate with the administration because they were not provided any funds for the said purpose.

INJURED: One person was injured when rival factions clashed over the ownership of a taxi stand at Wazir Dhand area of Jamrud tehsil in Khyber Agency on Tuesday.
