Wajid, Asma keep titles

LAHORE, Jan 18: Wapda's Wajid Ali and Asma Butt succeeded to retain their titles by winning the finals of men's and ladies'singles of the 47th National badminton championship at Iqbal Park Sports Complex on Sunday.

Wajid carved out straight two sets victory, which is his fifth consecutive, against Ahsan Qamar of New Khan 15-10, 15-10 in just 37minutes. He delighted crowd with his powerful smashing while his rival continued to hit most of the shots out of the court.

Wajid received a trophy and cash prize of Rs 20,000 while Ahsan had to be content with Rs 14,000. Later, Wajid said that he wanted to win this title for ten consecutive years and gave the credit of this win to his coach Liaqat Ali.

In the ladies' singles final, Asma Butt proved too good for FarzanaSaleem and easily nailed her down 11-1, 11-0. Asma, who won the title for the eighth consecutive time, spent only 12 minutes to eliminate her. Asma received a trophy and cash prize of Rs 10,000 while Farzana too got a trophy and pocketed Rs 7,000.

Mixed Doubles: Tahir Ishaq-Palosha bt Shabbar Hussain-Zareena Waqar 12-15, 15-3, 15-10. Veteran's Singles (final): Nadeem Javed (Wapda) bt Fayyaz Ahmad (Punjab) 15-2, 15-6. Veteran's Doubles (final): Naveed Javed-Aftab Khan bt Habib-Ali Nawaz 15-10, 15-6.
