NEWCASTLE, Jan 9: Steve Waugh experienced the highs and lows of cricket when he scored just seven playing for New South Wales in a Sheffield Shield cricket match against Victoria here on Friday.

Just three days after his unforgettable final day as a Test player in the fourth Test against India in Sydney, Waugh lasted just 34 minutes and 27 balls. After winning the toss, NSW made 317 with Victoria 19 without loss in reply at stumps on day one in the four-day game.

Waugh was out when he gave a thin edge behind from Victorian seamer Mick Lewis. Only Test No.6 Simon Katich (76), Phil Jaques (56) and Brad Haddin (50) offered any real resistance to the steady and combative Victorians, who succeeded in getting under the skin of Steve's twin brother and former Test batsman Mark.

He became involved in discussions with Victorian captain Cameron White after taking an extra run when a throw at the stumps rebounded off his body.
