LAHORE, Jan 9: United Nations resolutions are the bedrock of Pakistan's legal, political and moral stand on Kashmir, and indication by President Pervez Musharraf that the world body's documents can be set aside to clear the way for a solution to the dispute is his personal opinion not enjoying the backing of the nation, the Jamaat-i-Islami says.
A resolution passed by the party's central Shoora said that the U-turn made by the general was a shameful and cowardly act. Kashmir, it said, was a matter of life and death for Pakistan. India had illegally occupied a major part of Jammu and Kashmir, against which Kashmiris had launched a Jehad.
The resolution said that impatience shown by the government for improvement of relations with India before and after the Saarc summit amounted to humiliating the entire nation.
Similarly, it said, Pakistan announced a unilateral ceasefire which was 'greeted' by India by starting the construction of a fence along the LoC. This was a joint US-India move to make the LoC international border, the resolution said, adding that under US pressure the Pakistan government was also working on the same line.
Referring to proposals for soft borders, bus service between capitals of Pakistan and Indian-administered Kashmirs, exchange of cultural troupes, common currency and making South Asia an economic union, the resolution said they were aimed at brushing the Kashmir dispute under the carpet and ensuring India's political and economic superiority in South Asia.
It said Prime Minister Vajpayee's proposal that India, Pakistan and Bangladesh should jointly celebrate the anniversary of the 1857 war for independence was a part of a United India plan.
Expressing solidarity with the freedom movement of the Kashmiris, the resolution called for a special session of parliament where the government announce its Kashmir policy in clear terms.
Underlining the need for concrete steps to get the Kashmiris their right to self-determination, the resolution demanded the reconstitution of parliament's Kashmir committee. Another resolution demanded steps to give women their due rights.
