KARACHI, Jan 7: The crew member of the grounded ship Tasman Spirit, who attempted to commit suicide on Monday, was shifted from the intensive care unit to a room of a private hospital on Wednesday.

The hospital sources said that Koytsos Georgis, IIIrd Engineer in the broken ship, was recovering. Doctors said Mr Georgis was also under psychiatric treatment, as he was suffering from mental disorders.

Mr Georgis had attempted to commit suicide at a room of a five star hotel on Monday. "We have found a razor and a broken glass. Georgis slit his left wrist to allow bleeding," a senior investigating official said.

"His son has arrived at the hospital from Greece and told us that Georgis had been out of his home for the last two years. He was dying to see his family, which could be the reason behind his attempt for suicide," the official said.

He said that seven crew members had been in police custody at a five star hotel since the ship Tasman Spirit carrying 67,000 tonnes crude oil ran aground on July 27, 2003.

Artillery Maidan police had registered an FIR (02/2004) against Mr Georgis for attempting suicide under Section 325 of the PPC. Mr Georgis was remanded to police custody by a court till Jan 11, for investigation into the case.

"As soon as doctors allow us, we will question Mr Georgis for taking the extreme step. We have also deployed police guards outside the room of the hospital," the official added.
