PESHAWAR, May 14: The Joint Action Committee, an alliance of various NGOs, staged a demonstration against Hudood laws in front of Peshawar Press Club here on Tuesday.

The activists of Aurat Foundation, International Law Group, Human Right’s Commission and other NGOs took part in the protest and demanded an early repeal of what they called discriminatory section of the ordinance.

The activists, carrying placards inscribed with slogans against the Hudood Ordinance, remained outside the club for some time.

They also displayed placards demanding release of Zafran Bibi, who had been awarded stoning to death sentence by a Kohat court.

Shamim Qaiser, a district councillor, told Dawn that she had filed a resolution against the Hudood Ordinance with the convener of district council, but he turned it down. The convener termed her stand on the issue tantamount to infidelity, she added.

In her resolution, she said, she wanted to draw the attention of the councillors towards the anti-women clauses of the Hudood Ordinance.
