PESHAWAR, Jan 19: Following the resignation of Town-III acting nazim Mujahid Ali the council members have announced to elect new nazim on Jan 22.

The seat had fallen vacant last year when Town Nazim Engineer Shakirullah resigned to contest Feb 18 general elections. The council had then elected Mujid Ali as acting nazim. Though he belonged to Pakistan People’s Party, yet some of his own party men stood against him. In a house of 30 16 members expressed no confidence in him and nominated Niamat Ali as acting nazim on Dec 30.

However, the Local Council Board rejected the no-confidence motion and allowed Mr Mujahid to continue his responsibilities as town nazim. A reconciliatory committee comprising six members of the council tried to resolve the matter, but opposition occupied the naizm’s office and didn’t let him continue his duties.

Following the differences, Mr Mujahid tendered his resignation on Jan 15, but the LCB didn’t accept it yet. The town council has now announced Jan 22 for nominating next acting town nazim.

With the nazim’s resignation differences among the members of the council have further widened where every political group is trying to get its own nominee elected as town nazim. The Jamaat-i-Islami has fielded Ishtiaq Musafar as its candidate, while Niamat Ali is also in the run for the seat.
