DBA elections turn into PPP-PML-N contest

GUJRANWALA, Jan 13: Candidates for the slots of the District Bar Association (DBA) are using party affiliations, mainly the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) to win the favour of voters. Elections to be held on Wednesday (today) will test the popularity of the parties.

Candidates for the president slot are Ilyas Rehan and Haji Amir Afzal. PPP-backed Rehan has been the bar president for three times while his rival Mr Afzal enjoys the support of the PML-N and other parties.

A one-to-one contest is being held for the seats of senior vice president and vice president. For the senior vice president office, Nawaz Gul Goraya and Malik Ijaz Ahmad are in the run and Hamid Raza and Ahsan Hashmi are in the field for vice president slot.

There are four candidates for the slot of general secretary -- Adnan Saeed, Abdul Majid, Rana Waqas Hassan Khan and Sarfraz Butt. Similarly, Asad Rauf Chattha and Imran Haider are fighting for the seat of joint secretary and Nisar Haroon and Rana Arshad for finance secretary.

SPECIAL PACKAGE: State Minister for Communications Imtiaz Safdar Warraich said a special package for the construction of roads in and around the city was under process and work on roads would begin soon.

At an inauguration ceremony of private college here, Mr Warraich said he had warned the contractors to build GT Road from Gujranwala to Lahore in stipulated period or face action.

He said the construction and widening of GT Road was being done at a snail’s pace.
