KARACHI, Dec 30: Two better ranked players from the NWFP, Nousherwan and Owais Khan, fell in the first round of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Open squash championship at the Roshan Khan–Jahangir Khan Squash complex on Tuesday.
Qualifier and unseeded Farhan Zaman of the Navy stunned seventh seed Nousherwan in four sets 11-0, 13-15, 11-3, 11-8, and is now drawn to meet fourth seed Aurangzaib Mahmond in the quarter-finals.
In the other mild upset, another qualifier Jahanzaib Masood of Sindh also cruised into the last eight by getting the better of eighth seed Owais 15-13, 11-4, 11-8. Jahanzaib faces third seed Hamza Bokhari in the next fixture.
The top four seeds, meanwhile, experienced a smooth run in the first round. Top seed Kashif Khan disposed off qualifier Tariq Khan 11-8, 11-3, 11-9; second seed Sheikh Saquib inflicted a 11-9, 11-7, 11-4 defeat on Mahad Javed; third seed Hamza Bokhari beat Abbas Ali 11-8, 11-2, 11-7 while fourth seed Aurangzaib Mahmond conceded a set in outwitting Saad Shahid 11-5, 13-15, 11-3, 11-8.
Meanwhile, the organisers have revised the prize money from Rs0.2 million to Rs150,000 following the withdrawal of Farhan Mehboob, Yasir Butt and Shamsul Islam the other day.
