KARACHI, Dec 28: Karachi’s teenager Saad Shahid pulled off a major upset when he shocked top seeded qualifier Owais Khan of NWFP in five sets to earn a place in the final qualifying round of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Open squash championship on Sunday.

Trailing 1-2, Saad bounced back to turn the tables on experienced opponent by claiming the next two sets to win 11-7, 9-11, 8-11, 11-7, 13-11 at the PN Roshan Khan-Jahangir Khan Squash Complex.

Sindh’s M. Yousuf, Balochistan’s Abbas Ali and NWFP’s Nousherwan also struggled to overcome their opponents before making it to the final qualifying round.

Earlier, 20 players from across the country reported for the qualifiers. They include Sindh (13), Punjab (2), NWFP (2), Balochistan (2) and Navy (1).

The third and final qualifying round will be played on Monday at 2.00pm.
