GUJRANWALA, Dec 24: A district and sessions judge released 19 prisoners involved in petty cases during a visit to the Central Jail on Wednesday.
District and Sessions Judge Iftikhar Husain Shah visited the jail, got prepared a list of prisoners involved in petty cases and ordered their immediate release. Prisoner Kulsoom was one of those released to participate in the wedding of her daughter on Wednesday.
The judge also visited barracks, jail hospital and kitchen and directed the jail authorities to provide facilities to prisoners in accordance with the jail manual.
WASA DEFAULTERS: The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) has sent challans of 1,500 defaulters to the court for recovery of outstanding dues, Wasa Managing Director Tariq Mahmood said at a meeting with recovery officers.
He said Wasa’s outstanding dues had increased from Rs260 million to Rs340 million.
URGENT MAIL: At least 30 post offices of the city have been authorised to collect urgent mail from industrialists and traders like private courier services.
Speaking at a meeting here, Deputy Post Master General Syed Nadim Hasan said arrangement would be made shortly for the training of the postal staff for the timely delivery of urgent mail.
BAR ELECTION: The district bar association will elect its representatives on Jan 14.
According to election board chairman Ehsanul Haq Bukhtiar, candidates can file nomination papers from Jan 1 to Jan 2. Nomination papers will be scrutinised on Jan 3 and objections to nomination papers will be received the same day. Nomination papers can be withdrawn on Jan 5 and the final list of candidates will be displayed on Jan 6. The polling will continue from 8am to 4pm without any break.
The district bar has about 1,800 registered voters.
ENCOUNTER: A police constable was injured in an encounter with proclaimed offenders in Naugaran village near Wazirabad.
Police had a tip that some offenders were present in the village. A police team surrounded the village and told the offenders to surrender, but they opened fire at the police and injured constable Afzal Dogar.
The police retaliated and an encounter ensued. The encounter was going on till 6pm, when this report was filed.
