ST MORITZ (Switzerland), Dec 20: Lara Gut of Switzerland became the youngest ever winner of a women’s World Cup race here on Saturday when the 17-year-old triumphed in a super-G race.

She finished ahead of compatriot Fabienne Suter with Italy’s Nadia Fanchini, who won the season’s opening super-G in Lake Louise, Canada, in third.

Already identified as the great hope for women’s skiing in Switzerland, Gut gave clear indication by finishing fifth in Friday’s super-combined here that she was ready to strike on home snow. Gut produced a near flawless run to time 57.38 seconds and that proved an insurmountable barrier for the rest of the field.

Results (World Cup super-G):

1 Lara Gut (Switzerland) 57.38; 2 Fabienne Suter (Switzerland) 58.01; 3 Nadia Fanchini (Italy) 58.25; 4 Anja Paerson (Sweden) 58.39; 5 Nicole Hosp (Austria) 58.43; 6 Andrea Dettling (Switzerland) 58.44; 7 Fraenzi Aufdenblatten (Switzerland) 58.45; 8 Britt Janyk (Canada) 58.47; 9 Renate Goetschl (Austria) 58.57; 10 Tina Maze (Slovenia) 58.59.—AFP
