26 hurt as rain lashes Sindh

HYDERABAD, Dec 18: Twenty-six people suffered minor injuries in rain-related incidents in Shikarpur and Kashmore and growers in lower Sindh reported damage to standing crops as light to heavy rains continued to lash the province on Thursday.

It started raining on Wednesday morning and continued on Thursday, followed by loadshedding for longer duration. Vehicular traffic between Hyderabad and interior Sindh remained thin.

According to meteorological department, more rains are expected during next 2-3 days.

In Hyderabad, people rushed to Rani Bagh and other recreational spots in the city after weather turned cloudy and it started raining lightly on Thursday after a break of a couple of days.

Rains began in the morning and continued for around four hours intermittently. The situation was somewhat chaotic around the under-construction flyovers whose work had been stopped for some reasons.

Small and big craters on the dug-up roads are posing difficulty to commuters, especially motorcyclists.

A Hesco spokesman said that power supply had been suspended temporarily to avoid a major breakdown in view of rains.

Mercury dropped to 15.5 Celsius at the minimum and 18 degrees centigrade at maximum in the day. The airport’s meteorological office recorded 4.3 mm of rains.

In Shikarpur, 14 people, including children, suffered injuries when a house collapsed and lightning hit another house in Garhi Yasin and Khanpur areas.

Seven members of a family were seriously wounded when roof and walls of their katcha house collapsed during rain when they were asleep in their home in Faqirpur village near Madeji. They were rescued by neighbours and sent to hospital.

In another incident, seven people suffered wounds when lightning hit their house and caused fire to break out in Khair Mohammad Suhindro village of Khanpur talku late on Wednesday night.

In Kashmore, roof of a house in Eid Gah Muhalla collapsed on Wednesday night, injuring one Mohammad Qasim Solangi and his 11 family members.

It rained lightly in Nawabshah, Daur, Bandhi, 60-Miles, Jam Saheb, Buchheri and other areas followed by power outage.

In Sukkur, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Badin, Rohri, Pano Akil, Ghotki, Mirpur Mathelo, Ubauro, Daharki, Thull, Kandhkot, Jacobabad, Larakana and Khairpur, it started raining lightly in the morning and continued intermittently throughout the day. The irrigation authorities lowered water level in the canals to avert any breach.
