THATTA, Dec 18: The Thatta District Council has passed a resolution demanding recognition of Sindhi as the national language.

The resolution was tabled by Belo Union Council Nazim Syed Manzoor Hussain Shah and seconded by Saeedpur UC Nazim Naseer Shah during Thursday’s session. It said that the Sindhi language was the mother tongue of majority of Sindh population and used in routine life.

In 1843 when Britons invaded Sindh, they kept intact the status of the language and further improved it by officially correcting its grammar.

On August 29, 1856, the then Commissioner of Sindh Sir Bartel Frere through a declaration implemented Sindhi language as the official language of Sindh, however in 1959 the then martial law authorities through a verbal order terminated this practice.

On July 7, 1972, the contents of resolution said, the Sindh Assembly unanimously passed the Language Bill according to which Sindhi language was to be implemented as the official language within 12 years but due to another martial law it could not be.

The resolution pointed out that India had accepted Sindhi as one of the national languages out of the 22.

The council approved a car for the EDO Finance and Planning and Rs100,000 for the heir of assassinated leader of Jamiat Islami Tulba, Osama Gandhro as compensation.
