HYDERABAD, Dec 7: Five people, including three children, died and at least 15 suffered injuries in rain-related incidents while six canals developed breaches, inundating standing crops on hundreds of acres as rain continued to lash the province for the second day on Sunday.

The heavy rains triggered breaches in the waterways mostly in upper Sindh.

Power supply also remained suspended in most parts of the province as rain and accompanying winds uprooted a number of electricity poles.

In Khairpur, a man was electrocuted and two suffered injuries when a wall of their mud-thatched house collapsed and Kharal Minor, Kobri Shakh, Weho Waho and Ali Nawaz Wah developed breaches, inundating crops standing on hundreds of acres.

Reports reaching here said that 20 goats were found dead in Serai Makan village after having been hit by lightning at some time during the night.

The rains were followed by severe cold, which forced people to remain indoors.

There was no rain in Hyderabad though weather remained cloudy throughout the day.

It rained moderately in Dadu, Jamshoro and their adjoining towns and villages, disrupting power supply and traffic on the roads. A number of electricity poles were uprooted and transformers went out of order in the wake of rain.

A local journalist Gul Hassan Jamali was killed and three villagers were injured when lightning hit their village, Thariri Mohabbat.

In Jacobabad and Kashmore-Kandhkot districts, drainage system collapsed in the wake of rains, inundating the roads and streets with sewage and rainwater.

Growers complained that they had sustained heavy losses after irreparable damages to their crops.

In Naushahro Feroze, four of a family were injured when roof of their house caved in on them due to rain in Wari village near Moro. The injured Akbar Joyo, his wife Safooran, daughter Humera and Ghulam Rasool Joyo were brought to a Moro hospital.

In another incident, Gul Mohammad Soomro and his son Sadan were injured when roof of their house collapsed.

The rains triggered a breach Nather Detha minor, flooding crops standing on 400 acres and several houses near Wariyaso village of Moro.

The affected villagers held demonstrations against the irrigation officials and complained that despite giving them information about the breach they did not reach their village.

A grower said that the irrigation officials reached hours after the villagers had plugged the breach by lowering the gates of the minor and dumping hundreds of bags of sand in the breached place.

In Shikarpur, Rato Shakh developed a 50-foot breach, inundating paddy on hundreds of acres and freshly cultivated wheat crop.

The loss was estimated at millions of rupees.

In Larkana, two day rains left three dead, four injured and damaged harvested paddy piled up in open areas besides uprooting power pylons and the main tower at Radio Pakistan.

Larkana and Qambar-Shahdadkot district received 82 mm of rain in 36 hours, which was unprecedented in near past, said an official at local met office. The office predicted more rain on Sunday-Monday night.

Naseema Buledi, 4, died and Pavna, 6, was injured in Allah Rakhiyo Buledi village when the roof of their house caved in. Ghinwa Mangi, 8, also suffered injures when a wall of her house in Shahdadkot fell on her.

In Meenhal Abad and Shaikh Zayed Colony, two babies Rida Abro and Suhana, died when roof of their houses collapsed while Zeeba, 5, and Ulfat, 7, were injured.

In Sukkur, it rained throughout the day on the third consecutive day.
