ISLAMABAD, Dec 4: The Korean pair of Kim Hae-Sung and Shin Jung Yoon claimed the final of the doubles event of the second leg of ITF Pakistan Women Futures tennis tournament outclassing their Indian rivals Venkatesha Poojshree and Parul Goswami 6-4, 7-6 (2) played at the PTF Tennis Complex on Thursday.
The Koreans went on an offensive from the very onset building up a 2-0 lead breaking the first game of the Indian pair.
Kim and Shin won the first set 6-4 by hitting a number of winners down the line. Buoyed by some good performance in the first leg of the tournament the Korean pair continued their stride for clinching easy points in the second set, taking advantage of some unforced errors made by the Indian pair at the net.
In the second set Kim and Shin again built up the winning lead 5-2 breaking the first and third game of Parul and Venkatesha.
The Indian duo fought back hard and levelled the score five all displaying some superb game from the baseline breaking the eighth and tenth game of the Korean pair.
However, the set was decided on a tie break which was won by the Koreans 7-2 by a good display of volleys. Both the winning players bagged US $637 and the runners-up took US $343.
Meanwhile, in the singles event Sweta Solanki and Kim Hae-Sung will fight for the top honours in the final on Friday.
In the day’s first semi-final fourth seed Sweta Solanki from India created the major upset of the tournament upstaging compatriot Parul Goswami, also the top seed, of the tournament in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Sweta won the first set at 6-2, breaking the sixth and eighth game of Parul hitting some good shots down the line.
In the second set Sweta kept the same pressure to win it in similar style breaking the fourth and sixth game of Parul 6-2.
In the day’s second semi-final third seed Kim also created an upset as she defeated second seed, and winner of the first leg, Venkatesha Poojshree, in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Kim won the first set 6-1 breaking the fourth and sixth game of Venkatesha by playing forceful shots down the line.
Kim was in full command in the second set and built up the winning lead 4-0 breaking the Indian player’s first and third game.
Kim lifted the second set 6-2 holding her serve with the help of two aces.
