Rashid exhibits past excellence

KARACHI, Nov 25: Rashid Malik, a former Davis Cup captain, gave a glimpse of his past when he convincingly beat Afaq Zafar 6-0, 6-1 to advance into the last eight in the 45-plus singles of the Pakistan International Seniors world ranking tennis championship at the Karachi Club here on Tuesday.

Second seed Rashid now faces Khwaja Masroor who got a walkover against Lateef Yar Khan.

Top seed Tahir Gul, who got a first-round bye, handed out a 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Kamran Mirza to make it to the last-eight stage.

In the 35-plus singles, top seed Shabbir Gul of Hyderabad also cruised into the quarter-finals by getting the better of Balochistan’s unseeded Javed.

In the same category India’s K.V.N. Murthy, the third seed, got a walkover when his opponent Moin Memon failed to turn up. The visitor, who got a first round bye, is slated to meet Zulfiqar Hakeem in the next fixture.

Meanwhile, the 55 plus singles also commenced on Tuesday.

35-plus singles (second round):

Shabbir Gul (Hyderabad) bt Javed (Balochistan) 6-0, 6-0 and Zulfiqar Hakeem walkover Asif Shaikh.

55-plus singles (first round):

Jamil Khan bt Dr Shahid Baig (Balochistan) 6-3, 6-3; Iltifat Ahmed bt Mohammad Baqi Kakar (Balochistan) 6-1, 6-1.
