NWFP Governor Owais Ahmed Ghani was the chief guest at the closing ceremony which was also attended by Senior Provincial Minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour, NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar, NWFP Minister for Health Zahir Ali Shah, MPA Shagufta Malik, NWFP Minister for Sports Syed Aqil Shah, Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) president Lt Gen Arif Hassan and POA secretary Khaliq Khan.
A large number of spectators were also present on the occasion.
The NWFP claimed the second place with 2,342 points by winning 18 gold, 50 silver and 44 bronze medals.
Sindh remained at the third place with 1,978 points by grabbing 12 gold, 27 silver and 60 bronze medals.
Balochistan won 16 gold, 17 silver and 37 bronze medals and claimed the fourth position.
Madiha of Punjab was declared the best female athlete of the event as she won five golds (short put, discus, 100m, 200m and high jump).
Punjab’s Ghulam Mustafa and Adeel Akhtar were jointly declared best male athletes. Mustafa won gold in 400, 800m and 4x400 relay while Adeel got 100m, 200m and 4x100 relay golds.
The NWFP beat Punjab 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12 in the volleyball final. Sindh defeated Balochistan 25-12, 25-23, 25-23 to win the bronze.
In the hockey event, the NWFP, on best score average of 10 goals, won the gold, followed by Punjab with eight goals, and Sindh with seven goals.
Punjab won gold medal by defeating current national champions NWFP in the final of women baseball. Sindh won the bronze medal.
In the men’s baseball, the gold went to the NWFP, followed by Punjab and Balochistan.
Punjab scored 135 points by winning seven gold and three silver in men’s judo, followed by the NWFP with three gold, five silver and two bronze medals.
Sindh remained at the third position, taking two silver and six bronze medals.
Sindh won two silver and six bronze medals.
In the karate event, Punjab took six gold, one silver and four bronze medals. Balochistan won second position by winning two gold, four silver and five bronze medals.
Abdur Rahim of Punjab won gold medal in the table tennis event, followed by Punjab’s Mohsin Raza and Fahim Raza.
Saba Mushtaf claimed gold in the female category, followed by Abeera Ali (Sindh) and Sobia (NWFP).
Punjab won gold in men and women’s table tennis team events.
The NWFP made a clean sweep in the taekwondo event as it scored 95 points by taking four gold, three silver and one bronze medals.
Balochistan scored 75 points by winning two gold, three silver and three bronze medals.
Sindh was third with 70 points by taking two gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
In the final of the men’s badminton event, Punjab defeated Sindh while the NWFP defeated Punjab for the bronze medal.
In the kabaddi final, Punjab defeated the NWFP 45-35 in a thrilling match while Sindh got the bronze medal.
The cycling race from Mardan to Peshawar (60km) was won by Sindh’s Mohammad Sameer. He was followed by Punjab’s Ali and Jaffar Iqbal.
In the female scratch road, Shazia Mubariq won the gold medal, followed by Anum of the NWFP, and Neelam Riaz (Punjab).
Punjab finished at the top in the swimming event with 375 points by winning 14 gold, six silver and two bronze medals.
The NWFP won the silver with 218 points by claiming one gold, eight silver and seven bronze medals, followed by Balochistan with 94 points by winning one silver and six bronze medals.
The NWFP outclassed Punjab 2-1 in the final of the football event.
Khurshid scored both the goals for the winners while Amjad scored Punjab’s only goal.
In the boxing event, Sindh grabbed the first position with six gold, one silver and four bronze medals, followed by Punjab with three gold, one silver and seven bronze medals.
