Teachers’ protest drive from today

MULTAN, Nov 5: The Punjab Teachers’ Union (PTU) will launch a protest campaign from Thursday (today) if the government does not fulfill their demands.

Addressing a news conference here on Wednesday at the local press club, PTU president Haji Nazar Muhammad Vains said teachers had been protesting against the suspension of mobility allowance and delay in implementation of five per cent jobs quota for teachers’ sons.

He demanded that teachers’ minimum starting scale should be grade-9 instead of grade-7.

He said teachers would protest on Thursday by wearing black armbands, hold demonstrations at district level on 7th, and boycott classes on Nov 20. He said teachers from all over the province would gather at Nasser Bagh, Lahore and later besiege the Civil Secretariat.

COMPETITIONS: Phase-wise speech, debate and essay writing contests among the primary, middle, secondary, higher secondary and degree level students will start from Nov 13. It was decided at a meeting presided over by Multan Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) chairman Muhammad Nawaz Javed held here on Wednesday at its Jubilee Hall.

Board secretary Dr Muhammad Husain Azad told the meeting that according to the directions of the chief minister, these competitions were being organised in all the institutions of education department to arise creative skills in students.

He said winners would be awarded cash prizes between Rs1,000 and Rs200,000 while the Punjab government had allocated Rs141.9 million for the purpose.

He said the competitions would be held at all the eight educational boards and students of public sector and affiliated private sector institutions would be eligible for participation.

He said participation of only one student would be allowed from each educational institute and male and female competitions would be organised separately.

He said competitions would be held from Nov 13 to Nov 17 at “Markaz level”, from Nov 18 to Dec 3 at tehsil level, from Dec 4 to Dec 23 at district level and from Jan 19 at division level.
